This theory suggests that media influences individuals directly by what people call 'injection' information into people to trigger a response that they want (Katz & Lazarsfelf, 1955) e.g. politicians telling people what they want to hear in order for us to respond to them by voting for them.
Where did this theory start?
The theory came about in 1930's. This theory did not come about through research it came abut through assumptions. Assumptions suggest that people are no longer controlled by their instincts anymore and are therefore controlled by media influences which is how the Hypodermic needle model theory came about.
How does this theory relate to the horror genre?
This theory relates to horror genre because it is exactly how it's displayed. When most people come out of a horror they believe that whats happened to someone in a horror is capable of happening to them so it's like someone has injected something into our brains to make us believe that things in horror are reality. This also relates to horror because it brings across the idea of messing with you as does horror.
Recognition for/against the theory?
As the years go on more and more people particularly older people are for this theory as they believe that most young people are influenced by media. An example of this theory could be the 2 young boys who murdered the 2 year old in Manchester. They had just watched a horror film and the horror they had watched had been injected into them that was why they did this, it is of the norm. Some people are against the theory because they believe people can believe what they want to believe and nobody is forced to believe anything it's through choice therefore media doesn't inject things into us it just gives us an idea whether we choose to believe it is up to us!
